Live Electronics and Improvisation

Over the years I’ve also developed an improvisational performance practice which lies between sound design, experimental music, improvisation, and live electronics. One of the things I love and appreciate about experimental music as a form is the kind of anything goes mentality in its approach to music and composition. The idea that a bowl of water, a repeated word, or a concrete block can all be instruments in their own right I think provides a lot of potentiality for new ideas to spring forth.

For me personally, this practice often involves disparate elements that get weaved together in different ways depending on the performance context. In this way, I don’t end up playing the same instrument in different contexts, but rather get to match my tools or instrument with the context of the performance itself and who my collaborator might be. Some previous performance tools have included live hydrophone, guitar and pedalboard, extended vocal technique, and electronic processing via Ableton Live.
